Dorstenia Gigas – Rare Caudiciform Gem from Socotra, Yemen
Discover one of the most extraordinary succulents on the planet: Dorstenia gigas, a truly rare and sculptural caudiciform species native to the remote island of Socotra in Yemen. Grown from seed through our own careful propagation at TOMs FLOWer CLUB, this is a plant that offers both rarity and origin authenticity – not a clone but a genetically unique specimen.
In its natural habitat, Dorstenia gigas clings to sheer limestone cliffs and rocky ledges where few other plants can survive. It forms an impressive, coral-like trunk that can grow several meters tall in the wild, but remains compact and collectible in pot culture.
This unusual member of the fig family (Moraceae) features a massive, sculptural caudex, green, sparingly branched stems, and broad 10–20 cm long leaves. The bizarre inflorescences are flat, disk-shaped structures dotted with tiny flowers – a true curiosity for plant lovers. Though monoecious, it typically requires cross-pollination from genetically distinct individuals to produce viable seeds, making seed-grown specimens like this especially precious.
Key Features:
-
Grown from own seed propagation – not cloned
-
Native to Socotra Island, Yemen – a biodiversity hotspot
-
Extremely rare in cultivation
-
Stunning caudex formation, up to 50–150 cm in diameter
